Founded in 14th century near the border with Lithuania on the Lidei River, Lida offers a number of interesting sights. Not far from the castle is the Pharny Cathedral (1747) with a monument to F.Skorina to its left. A mile further is Michailovskaya Church. During the reign of the Soviets it was converted into a planetarium with a perfectly circle-shaped hall inside. Time permitting, the group can also take a 30km drive to the famous defence-style Murovanka Church, a very interesting monument of architecture the 16th century.
The castle surrounded by ramparts and trenches dates back to 1323 and was built by Gedymin – the Duke of the Great Dutchy of Lithuania. For a number of centuries the castle remained the most powerful citadel in Western Belarus. Multiple sieges damaged the walls and devastated the inside buildings. Today the castle is being restored according to the recovered drawings and blueprints. An ascent to one of the towers will give one a magnificent view.
The highlight of this tour is a knight performance with medieval games in which guests play part, too. One of the most popular programs is Ygailo’s Wedding that follows after a brief guided walk around the castle. The interactive program includes a few knight battles, putting on their armour and training with the medieval weaponry, bow shooting and a few other medieval games. During the performance at daylight as well as at the light of night torches guests will enjoy traditional cuisine dishes and sing songs with the folklore band.
Batleika – national puppet theatre – and special events programs are available on request, too. The hospitable monarch of Lida is waiting for you!
