By 22 June 1941 about 8,000 troops, not including their families, were deployed in the Fortress. The Nazi assigned the assault on the fortress to their 17000-strong infantry division enforced by other units. The seizure of the fortress was scheduled for noon of 23 June…
However, the exhausted and outnumbered personnel of the fortress managed to fight until July lacking water, food and ammunition.
On 8 May 1965 The Brest Fortress was awarded with a Fortress-Hero title. It has been a memorial complex since 1971. On the territory one can find a number of monuments to its defenders and visit the museum of the Defense of the Brest Fortress.
Besides the Fortress, you will visit Museum of the Recovered Values – this museum houses different artefacts like icons and other works of art that failed to have been smuggled from the USSR and the Republic of Belarus thanks to the efforts of border guards. The museum guides will tell you many interesting facts about each relic as well as details about smuggler’s tricks.
